The ultimate goal of the Shade Creek Watershed Restoration project is to improve and protect the water quality in Shade Creek and it’s tributaries with the hope of eventually sustaining trout and other aquatic life. AMD treatment within the Shade Creek basin will have a major impact on the Stonycreek River and Border Dam. If Border Dam is put back on-line, it may be used for an industrial water supply, thereby leaving more water in the Quemahoning Dam, which could be used for allocated conservation releases. Before Border Dam can be used, Shade Creek’s water quality must be dramatically improved. The improvement of Shade Creek is heavily contingent on treating USGS # 16, and to a lesser degree, USGS #19. These two discharges comprise about 95% of the total iron load to Dark Shade Creek If these discharges can be effectively treated; improvement of aquatic habitat from Central City to Seanor should be dramatic. It is conceivable that the lower reaches of Shade Creek (below its confluence with Clear Shade and Dark Shade Creeks) could be restored as a fishery. |
